Losing a tooth as a child doesn’t just mean their new smile is on its way – it means the tooth fairy is on its way too! For years, this mythical creature has been known to sneak into your child’s room as they doze, collect their tooth, and replace it with a small treat. But did you know that there are other tooth fairy stories? Keep reading to learn a few interesting myths from around the globe, including the tooth mouse!

The Tooth Mouse (France)

In America, children look forward to a visit from the tooth fairy. In France, and French-speaking countries, children look forward to a visit from the tooth mouse! Lovingly named “La Petite Souris” or “Ratóncito Pérez,” this mythical creature also retrieves lost teeth at night (or so the legend goes).

Tooth Trolls (Finland)

In Finland, they have a very different take on the tooth fairy. Instead, kids are told that Hammaspeikko, the tooth troll, drills holes into the teeth of children that eat too much candy. The good news is that there is one way to keep him away: a solid brushing routine! So, while the story may be a bit more sinister, it does focus on creating a good oral hygiene routine, which is always a plus.

Tooth Powers (Turkey)

For families in Turkey, lost teeth are believed to have some influence! For this reason, parents bury their child’s teeth in notable places, like a garden outside a hospital or the White House. This practice is a symbol of the wishes they have for their child’s life and future endeavors.

The Tooth Roof (China)

In China, children don’t put their tooth under their pillow, they throw them on the roof! It is believed that throwing the lower teeth on the roof and burying the upper teeth in the ground will make sure the new, adult teeth come in quickly.

Now you know about a few of the many tooth fairy stories from around the globe. If your child is in the process of losing their teeth, then consider sharing these myths with them to help make the process even more exciting!
