However, as uncomfortable as this may be for certain children, dental care isn’t something that can be put off—meaning it’s wise to look for ways of making dental visits a positive and productive experience! With the right approach, you can help your child feel far more comfortable and confident when it comes time for their appointment; here’s what you need to know.

Tip #1. Explain the Visit to Your Child in Detail

You can talk to your child about what to expect during their upcoming visit using simple, reassuring language. Explain all of the steps of a dental visit, from showing up and sitting in the waiting area to being led back to the treatment room. If possible, show them visual aids, such as pictures of the office or even stories that feature children visiting the dentist. If your child can visualize every aspect of the appointment, they’ll know what to expect and won’t be surprised by anything.

Tip #2. Schedule a Meet & Greet

If possible, and especially if it’s your child’s first visit to the office, consider scheduling a short introductory appointment. This gives them (and you as well) the chance to meet the dentist and staff, explore the office, and become familiar with the setting, including the many sights, sounds, and smells they’ll experience—all without the pressure of having to sit in the treatment chair for a checkup and cleaning. These visits are excellent for reducing dental fear and establishing trust, not to mention, they’re a very small commitment!

Tip #3. Choose the Right Appointment Time

Whenever possible, choose a time of day when your child is usually calm and alert; for many children, morning appointments tend to work best. You should also consider when other people might be going to the dentist—for example, if you think your child might feel overwhelmed at a crowded dental office, trying to squeeze in an afternoon appointment right after school may not be ideal.

Tip #4. Bring Comfort Items from Home

Whether it’s a favorite stuffed animal, a weighted blanket, or even noise-cancelling headphones, sometimes comfort items can make all the difference in the world when it comes to helping children sit through a dental appointment. Comfort items help to reduce anxiety and provide a sense of familiarity, both of which children with autism can greatly benefit from.

With proper practice and preparation, regular dental visits for children with an autism spectrum disorder, sensory issues, or general anxiety do not need to be stressful or anxiety-inducing at all!

About the Practice

Our team here at Simple Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics has served patients and families in Nashua and the surrounding area for several years, offering a wide range of dental and orthodontic services for children of all ages.
